IS IT ANGER OR IS IT ABUSE?
Power & Control v. Anger
Let's face it, most of us get angry sometimes. Anger is a natural emotion often rooted in rejection, frustration, fear, pain, betrayal, guilt, abandonment, humiliation and sometimes even abuse. But, does that mean we are all abusive? NO!
Teen dating abuse is domestic violence in kid form.
It happens when a dating partner uses tactics like jealousy, isolation, threats, humiliation, put downs, dominance, verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual assault, and/or stalking to gain power and control over their boyfriend, girlfriend or intimate partner. National statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that 1 in 3 teens experience it. In order to prevent teen dating abuse, we need to address what causes it.
ROOT CAUSE PREVENTION
Teen dating abuse is deeply rooted in unhealthy gender norms, taught abusive behaviors, social acceptance, insecurity and the inability of some youth to set boundaries and make healthy choices. RISK FACTORS FOR TEENS PERPETRATING ABUSE
